For many years I have been obsessed with researching, writing, and coaching on the topic of managing careers - the strategies, tactics, and ideas that enable oneself to realize achievement and fulfillment doing work you love. As a former product manager, I viewed managing a career as similar to managing a product. Concepts such as a clear and unique value proposition and a strong, memorable brand are required for products and careers. This shaped the original name of this newsletter, Product You.
As I continued my research over the last few months, new ideas and trends shaped my thinking. First, a key theme of consciousness and awareness emerged as an important difference between us as career products and the products we use daily. Extensive research confirms that the predictor of high performance and winning the “outer game” is winning the “inner game.” And although the career framework that I authored years ago includes strategies on this topic, my recent experiences have confirmed how important mental awareness and strength are to grow and adapt in changing markets. Second, the emergence of artificial intelligence tools accessible to everyone is changing how we work and amplifying our true potential. As a former data scientist, I will write more about using AI capabilities as copilots to maximize human potential. The overall theme remains one of managing careers through a fusion of consciousness, intelligence, technology, strategy, and philosophy.
In this spirit, I will share more about these topics and how I apply them in upcoming newsletter editions. I will periodically interview interesting thought leaders deep in these areas and learn from their perspectives. This newsletter is renamed Graymatter to symbolize the importance of consciousness and intelligence that we create as humans and how AI technology can expand upon this to power the unique purpose each of us pursues. I hope it opens your mind to ideas shaping your path and activates changes to experience your true potential.
